Electric Drywall Sander vs Hand Sander: Which Is Better for DIY Projects?
So I got the crazy idea to install drywall in my garage…
Since I started working on my garage makeover, I decided to test both an electric drywall sander and a hand sander with dust collection—and here’s what I learned.
So if you’re wondering which one is worth your money (and your time), here’s my real DIY breakdown.
Electric Drywall Sander Overview
An electric drywall sander is designed to make sanding faster, smoother, and less physically demanding. I got mine from Harbor Freight but linked a similar unit from Amazon.
Using the 17lb electric drywall sander
Pros:
Covers large areas quickly
More consistent finish
Has a light feature that helps see drywall imperfections
Cons:
Higher upfront cost $150
Learning curve for beginners
Can over sand if you’re not careful
VERY heavy
Hand Sander with Vacuum Overview
A hand sander is the more traditional and budget-friendly option.
Pros:
More control for detail work
Lower cost $50
Great for small areas or touch-ups
Cons:
Time-consuming
Physically tiring
Harder to get an even finish on large surfaces
Key Differences (What Actually Matters)
1. Speed
Electric wins—no question.
What took me hours by hand was done in a fraction of the time.
2. Finish Quality
Electric gives a smoother, more even finish—especially on large walls.
3. Dust Control
Both can have vacuum attachments but please make sure you have the right Shop Vac filter.
4. Ease of Use
Hand sanding is simpler, but more labor-intensive.
Electric sanding takes practice but saves time long term.
If I had to do this project again…What would I do?
Buy both! I would use the electric sander for the walls and the hand sander for the ceiling, corners, and hard to reach areas!
