DIY Water Heater Cover (Garage-Friendly + Removable Design)

Before-and-after concept of a garage makeover, highlighting a DIY water heater cover project.

If your garage looks anything like mine, there’s probably one thing ruining the entire space…

For me? It was my hot water heater.

Right in the corner. Impossible to ignore. And definitely not the vibe I was going for in my garage makeover.

But I also knew one thing:
👉 I still needed easy access to it.

So instead of trying to completely hide it, I built a removable, space-saving water heater cover that also doubles as functional storage.

And the best part?
This is a beginner-friendly DIY project you can complete in ONE weekend

✨ The Goal

  • Hide the water heater (without blocking access)

  • Maximize garage storage

  • Keep the design clean and minimal

  • Make it removable or slide-out friendly

Hot water heater is a major eye sore for most garages. Let’s fix that for less than $200

📏 Step 1: Measure Your Space

Start by measuring:

  • Height of your water heater

  • Width and depth of the corner

  • Clearance needed for access

⚠️ Important:
Make sure you leave enough room to:

  • Access valves

  • Perform maintenance

  • Remove the cover easily

Step 2: Build the Frame

Using your 2x4×8s, pocket hole jig, and pocket hole screws build a simple frame that:

  • Sits in front of the water heater

  • Extends along the side (if in a corner)

  • Stays lightweight but sturdy

Step 3: Add functionality

This is where the project becomes more than just a cover 👏

I added:

  • Pegboard on both sides for tool storage

  • Thinking about adding a White Board

Adding peg board to make this project functional

Step 4: Make It Removable (or Sliding)

I added Casters so that I would be able to slide the cover out of the way to access the hot water heater when needed

Adding casters to this project allows the hot water heater to still be accessible

This completely changed the look of my garage!
